Hike for Health on the Wildflower Trail

Strap on your hiking boots for this family-friendly, fun outing presented by the Land Trust of North Alabama, on July 9.

We are proud to partner with the Land Trust of North Alabama, to offer this family-friendly, fun and easy hike on the lovely Wildflower Trail at the foot of Monte Sano Mountain. As we enjoy the hike, Lynne Weninegar, a botanist, educator, and expert hike leader, will provide information about the health benefits of hiking, as well as ways we can protect ourselves from the summertime elements, so that we can enjoy the outdoors while staying safe and healthy.

The trail is 1.1 miles and will take about one to one and half hours to complete.

General guidelines for the hike: The hike will begin at 10 am. Please bring water to drink, and please wear long pants and closed toe shoes. Please wear bug repellant with Deet. We advise against bringing children under 5 years old. You may bring a picnic lunch to enjoy after the hike in nearby Hermitage Park. If it rains the day of the hike (and possibly the day before) the hike will be cancelled. Please check our Facebook page at facebook.com/HMCPL for a cancellation notice.

The start of the Wildflower Trail is located at the end of Cleermont Dr. SE, Huntsville. Please see this map for the starting location of the hike.

This event is free and open to the public, but participation is limited to 25 people. Please register for the hike using the form at http://hmcpl.org/events/2011-07/hike-health.

Please contact Luisa at lmorenilla [at] hmcpl [dot] org with any questions about this event.

Huntsville - Madison County Public Library's “Help Yourself to Health” Initiative

Did you know that people ask more questions about their cell phone plan then they ask their doctor? That’s about to change with Huntsville Madison County Library’s Help Yourself to Health initiative.  This program provides access to valuable health information for the community.

“Health literacy plays a pivotal role in the lives and well being of our community. It’s important that the Library is there to provide the information.” said Laurel Best, Executive Director of Huntsville Madison County Public Library.

Help Yourself to Health is a year-long project that features special events, educational forums, community outreach programs and access to Medline Plus Health Library, a non commercial information source.  All events and forums are free to the public.

“We want to empower people with health knowledge.” Rosalind Lett, Associate Director of Public Services at the Huntsville Madison County Public Library, commented on the initiative. “So when people talk to their healthcare professionals they can ask the right questions.”

The Help Yourself to Health Initiative has been made possible by a grant from National Library of Medicine.
