Another aspect of the Civil War

Award-winning journalist and historian D. Laurence Rogers will discuss his book “Apostles of Equality: The Birneys, the Republicans, and the Civil War,” featuring Huntsville’s Birney family and their activities in politics and war, on Friday, June 15, at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Huntsville-Madison County Public Library, 915 Monroe St.

The first biographical account of the life of James Gillespie Birney in more than 50 years, this insightful history illuminates and elevates an all-but-forgotten figure whose political career contributed mightily to the American political fabric.

Huntsville school board member Topper Birney, a descendant of James Birney, will introduce Rogers and answer questions during the Q&A session.

The program is co-hosted by the Huntsville-Madison County Public Library and J.F. Drake Memorial Learning Resources Center, Alabama A&M University.
