Race, read, give blood at Madison

The Madison Branch launches Summer Reading 2014 with “READ Around the Block,” a family block party the morning of Saturday, June 7.

Relay races for kids begins the annual kick-off Summer Reading activities at 8 a.m. Youngsters will divide into their age groups for short track events to inspire families to exercise together.

WZYP Radio will attend the block party with their ‘boom-box’ truck and celebrate the event with upbeat music.

“In honor of the library’s birthday, we will serve birthday cake at 9 a.m.,” library programming clerk Teresa Allison said. “We will have an exhibit of big trucks for children to explore. Come and see a fire truck, school bus, trash truck, dump truck, backhoe and more.”

As part of the Community Health Initiative through the library’s partnership with Huntsville Hospital, the Parenting Health Fair will also begin at 9 a.m. and run through 11 a.m. Community partners for this event include the Madison Hospital, Madison City Schools, Walgreens, Alabama Pediatric Dental, La Leche League, Eagle Rehab, Rocket City Mom, Dyslexia Center, The Rise School, Cornerstone Pediatrics, and Sarrell Dental.

LifeSouth Community Blood Centers will conduct a blood drive at the library from 9 to 11 a.m. LifeSouth urges residents to “Do something amazing — Donate Blood.” LifeSouth will serve refreshments to individuals who donate blood.

Animal Tales will present a program with live animals at 10 a.m.
