TV Time Machine offers police dramas

TV Time Machine takes you back to the 1960s and '70s on Monday, January 14, at 6 p.m. at the Main Library.

We'll show one episode each from two popular police dramas, "Mod Squad" and "Police Woman," in the second-floor events room. Admission is free.  Read more about TV Time Machine offers police dramas

Meet Abraham Lincoln

Meet President Abraham Lincoln -- in the person of Lincoln presenter John Voehl -- on Tuesday, December 11, at 6:30 p.m. in the atrium of the main Huntsville-Madison County Public Library. Admission is free.

Learn what life was like in the White House of the 1860s, including Christmas celebrations. When he was researching his role as Lincoln, Voehl said he discovered that our modern image of Santa Claus owes much to a drawing Lincoln commissioned from artist Thomas Nast of Santa visiting Union soldiers. December book sales

Two branch libraries will hold book sales during December: The Bessie K. Russell Library's event is set for December 7-14, and the Friends of the Library at the Tillman D. Hill Library in Hazel Green will hold a sale on December 7-15.

Celebrate the holidays with big bands

Enjoy the festive sounds of two great big bands during the Main Library's annual Holiday Concert on Saturday, Dec. 8, from 7 to 9 p.m.

The U.S. Army’s Four Star Jazz Orchestra and the Rocket City Jazz Orchestra will unite again for the evening in the atrium of the Main Library, 915 Monroe St. There will be music, singing, and dancing. Meet the Authors: Frye Gaillard and Sena Jeter Naslund

This double-header author event features Frye Gaillard, who discusses his latest book, The Books That Mattered: A Reader’s Memoir.  In this collection of essays, Frye pays tribute to the writings that enriched and altered his life.

Frye also talks about Sena Jeter Naslund, whose novels Ahab’s Wife: Or, The Star-Gazer and Adam & Eve are included in the memoir, and he introduces this Southern author favorite.  Sena then carries the discussion over to her own formidable work.

Trick or treat at the library

The main Huntsville-Madison County Public Library will host a Spooktacular Halloween Celebration on Wednesday, Oct. 31, from 10 a.m. to noon.

All the public services desks will be decorated for Halloween, and children will be invited to go from desk to desk to “trick or treat.” In the morning the Youth Services department will also host some not-too-spooky Halloween stories, fun and games. In the afternoon the Youth Services department will host crafts and a movie, “Halloweentown.” Read more about Trick or treat at the library

See spiders, cockroaches, snakes and more at the Creepy Critters live animal show at the Huntsville-Madison County Public Library on Saturday, Oct. 27. The program will be held at the main library, 915 Monroe St., at 10 a.m. and again at 1 p.m. at the Bailey Cove Branch Library, 1409 Weatherly Plaza S.E.
