In celebration of "Madison County Reads: Wicked City by Ace Atkins," we will screen the movie "The Phenix City Story." In this semi-documentary, an Alabama town is run by a crime syndicate that's grown fat on prostitution and crooked gambling, directed at soldiers from Fort Benning across the river. Lawyer John Patterson, back from the army, is triggered by what he sees to join the reformers with a plan: to run his father Albert for state attorney general. Happy Hour Book Club: Wicked City

In 1955, Look magazine called Phenix City, Alabama, "The Wickedest City in America," but even that may have been an understatement. It was a stew of organized crime and corruption, run by a machine that dealt with complaints forcefully and with dispatch.

In celebration of "Madison County Reads: Wicked City by Ace Atkins," the Reference & Adult Services Department will screen "Up From the Ashes: The Rebirth of Phenix City," the documentary which reveals the changes in Phenix City, Alabama, since the tumultuous 1950s. Professor Anissa Graham will follow the 30 minute documentary with a presentation entitled, "A View from Across the River." Graham, a native of Columbus, Georgia, will discuss how Phenix City was and is viewed by those who live across the Chattahoochee River.

Wicked City Movie: "Walking Tall"

Location: Second Floor Meeting Room
Date: Friday, April 29, 2011 - 12:00pm - 2:00pm

In celebration of "Madison County Reads: Wicked City by Ace Atkins," the Reference & Adult Services Department will screen "Walking Tall," the 1973 film which follows the criminals rousted from Phenix City, Alabama. Bring your lunch. Drinks will be provided. The movie will be screened in the Second Floor Events Room at the Downtown Library at 915 Monroe Street.
