Thoth administered the different forces in the universe to keep things in balance. In time, he delegated this administration to his other godlike beings, "angels." At some point, Thoth awakened a dormant, malevolent force, the Thing That Cries In The Night. Thoth works to contain and destroy the creature, and in so doing, neglects his duties in maintaining the cosmos. In the resulting power vacuum, the angels fight amongst themselves for dominance. 

The story of Hank Morgan, the quintessential self-reliant New Englander who brings to King Arthur's Age of Chivalry the "great and beneficent" miracles of nineteenth-century engineering and American ingenuity. Through the collision of past and present, Twain exposes the insubstantiality of both utopias, destroying the myth of the romantic ideal as well as his own era's faith in scientific and social progress.

Humanity here in this futuristic novel equals Snowman, and in Snowman's recollections Atwood re-creates a time much like our own, when a boy named Jimmy loved an elusive, damaged girl called Oryx and a sardonic genius called Crake. But now Snowman is alone, and as we learn why we also learn about a world that could become ours one day.

At age seven, Henry Day is kidnapped by hobgoblins and replaced by a look-alike. In alternating chapters, each Henry relates the tale of how he adjusts to his new situation. Human Henry learns to run with his hobgoblin pack, who never age; Hobgoblin Henry develops his uncanny talent for mimicry into a music career and settles into an otherwise unremarkable human life. Neither Henry feels entirely comfortable with his existence, and inevitably, their struggles to retrieve their increasingly forgotten pasts put them on paths that intersect decades later.

This stirring tale of adventure, courage and survival follows a band of very special creatures on their flight from the intrusion of man and the certain destruction of their home. Led by a stouthearted pair of brothers, they journey forth from their native Sandleford Warren through the harrowing trials posed by predators and adversaries, to a mysterious promised land and a more perfect society.
