A Virtual Field Trip to the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute

Join us for a very special event for African American History month. The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute is sending instructors to Huntsville to conduct a "Virtual Field Trip" to the Institute! They'll talk about the events that happened in Birmingham in 1963 (in a child friendly way, of course), tell you about the BCRI, and help the kids play a Tug of War object lesson about equality.  This Virtual Field Trip is perfect for homeschooling families with kids in grades K-5.

A Visit with Harriet Tubman

This program, appropriate for all ages, features a re-enactment of famous abolitionist Harriet Tubman by local actor, Renee Mobley.   Renee’s beautiful and inspired portrayal of Harriet Tubman was very popular in previous years and we are so glad she is back for 2013!  At the end of the performance she hosts a question and answer session where children and their families can ask questions about Harriet Tubman, history, and the civil rights movement.

Join Henry Winkler and Lin Oliver (authors of the Hank Zipzer books) as they host a panel of our favorite series authors!  You'll meet R.L. Stine (Goosebumps), Kathryn Lasky (Guardians of Ga'hoole), Jim Benton (Dear Dumb Diary) and Dav Pilkey (Captain Underpants).  They'll discuss what it's like to be an author and what makes their stories and characters come to life.  Recommended for Grades 2-5.

Celebration of Writing with Murphy Writers Group

The Murphy Writers Group will be hosting a celebration of writing on Sat, Dec 8th at 2pm in the 2nd Floor Meeting Room at the Main Library, 915 Monroe Street, Huntsville, AL 35801. The event will include guest speakers, readings by members of the writing group, and a progressive story.

Light refreshments will be served. Admission is free.
