After all the hardships that North Alabama has faced, admission to this year's Great Big Book Bash is now FREE!
The Library Foundation’s Annual Great Big Book Bash program is back again to give children and families a chance to interact with their favorite authors. This year, the Great Big Book Bash will serve as a kick-off to our Summer Reading Program on May 21, 2011 at the Main Branch Library. Two sessions will be hosted featuring two different authors. Come out and see the HMCPL “Bookmobile” as part of Sci Quest's "Hands-on Trucks" exhibit this Saturday. The Bookmobile will be issuing library cards; circulating materials (including a special selection of books about trucks); handing out special goodies; and showing other bookmobile features.
Everything from ice cream trucks to fire engines will be represented in the exhibit, as Sci-Quest assembles a variety of vehicles for this day of fun! Local organizations provide the vehicles for children to get a unique, close-up look and hands-on experience.
Come out and see the HMCPL “Bookmobile” as part of Sci Quest's "Hands-on Trucks" exhibit this Saturday.
The event serves as a great opportunity to give families in our community an opportunity to learn more about HMCPL and bookmobile services. The HMCPL Bookmobile will participate in many of the summer programs that will be offered by local school systems this year. The Sci Quest "Hands-on Trucks" exhibit will allow the Bookmobile to be introduced to children that will be seeing the truck over the summer. This summer, the children of Huntsville and Madison County read 6,045 hours!
Our sponsors donated money for every hour read. At the end of the summer, it was enough that we were able to adopt a humpback whale from the Oceanic Society. They also gave him his name: Gus Whaley.
The Oceanic Society had this to say:
"Dear Summer Readers of the Huntsville Madison County Public Library, congratulations on reading 6,045 hours this past summer! You have more than earned your adoption of a humpback whale!" Read more about Meet Gus Whaley
