Engage the Enemy More Closely III

The Battles of Coronel and the Falklands were the first two major naval engagements of the First World War.  The defeat of Admiral Craddock's British squadron in November 1914 at the Battle of Coronel by Admiral von Spee's Asiatic Squadron was Britain's first defeat at sea in over a century.  The British got revenge one month later at the Battle of the Falklands that ended the German threat to British maritime trade in the Atlantic and Pacific.  The events are thrilling and a little known campaign from the early days of modern navel warfare.

Views of Alabama Historic Lodgings

In the late 19th century most Alabama towns, no matter how small, usually had an inn or hotel for weary travelers.  These early buildings were usually simple wooden structures with inviting verandas.  For the more affluent traveler there were also fancy resorts and spas that offered an escape from the heat and miasmas that blanketed Alabama in the summer.  This program provides a visual tour of many of the early accommodations from the Colonial Inn at Fairhope to the Mentone Inn in the northeast corner of the state.

Hollywood Rock & Roll is a film/lecture series exploring the history of how rock & roll performers and their music have been portrayed in film.  The series will begin with the rise of rock & roll in the mid-50s with Elvis and other artists and track the growing popularity of popular music in films from the 1960s onwards.  Four complete films will be shown, as well as short film segments to highlight major performers and performances.  Documentaries and feature films will also be shown.  Each film will be introduced with a short lecture about its place in film
