Virgil Tibbs is a renowed Homicide Detective from Philadelphia returning to Mississippi in the sweltering summer to visit his mother, when a rich factory owner is found dead. The Industrialist was white, Tibbs is black and in the deep south at the time, that is enough reason for the local cops to arrest him on suspicion murder. After his identity and credentials are established, the Chief of Police lets Tibbs go and attempts to enlist his help in solving the case. An uneasy and complicated relationship develops between the southern Sherriff and the City slicker.

In the middle of the Great Depression, Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker meet when Clyde tries to steal Bonnie's mother's car. Bonnie, who is bored by her job as a waitress, is intrigued with Clyde, and decides to take up with him and become his partner in crime. They do some holdups, but their amateur efforts, while exciting, are not very lucrative.The duo's crime spree shifts into high gear once they hook up with a  dim-witted gas station attendant, C.W. Moss.Bonnie and Clyde turn from pulling small-time heists to robbing banks. Their exploits also become more violent.

Dr. Browder follows the fascinating story of how white politicans and black leaders often worked together behind the scenes to further advance the cause of civil rights after its heroic beginnings in the 1950-60s.
