Dr. Jennifer Garlen will discuss the darker side of Twain in works like A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, The Mysterious Stranger, "The Man That Corrupted Hadleyburg" and more.

"Headwaters: A Journey on Alabama Rivers" Presentation and Book Signing by Beth Maynor Young

The Big Read Keynote Lecture with Dr. Christopher Metress

Dr. Christopher Metress, English Professor and Director of the University Fellows Program at Samford University, will present a lecture on Mark Twain's The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. After receiving his Doctorate from Vanderbilt University in 1991, Dr. Metress taught at Wake Forest University for three years before coming to Samford in 1993. In the English Department, he teaches courses in American literature, film noir, and southern literature, and he frequently offers courses on British Literature at Samford's Daniel House in London, where he was professor-in-residence in the Fall of 1997.
