Main Library-Becky Thatcher Tea Party

The Becky Thatcher Tea Party is for ages 5-8 and will generate excitement for the characters in "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer." Attendees will enjoy a real tea service with an etiquette coach to provide tips on the proper behavior at the table.

Plumbing the Depths of Mark Twain

Another great lecture by Dr. Jennifer Garlen! Mark Twain is best remembered today as a humorist, but his tone as a writer changed his perspective darkened over the course of his life. Dr. Jennifer Garlen will discuss the darker side of Twain in works like A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, The Mysterious Stranger, "The Man That Corrupted Hadleyburg" and more.

"Headwaters: A Journey on Alabama Rivers" Presentation and Book Signing by Beth Maynor Young

Photographer Beth Maynor Young will give a presentation on her new book, Headwaters: A Journey on Alabama Rivers. Ms. Young is an accomplished conservation photographer who has spent much of her life chronicling the natural beauty and remnant wild places of the contemporary South. Books will be available for purchase and signing.

The Big Read Keynote Lecture with Dr. Christopher Metress

Dr. Christopher Metress, English Professor and Director of the University Fellows Program at Samford University, will present a lecture on Mark Twain's The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. After receiving his Doctorate from Vanderbilt University in 1991, Dr. Metress taught at Wake Forest University for three years before coming to Samford in 1993. In the English Department, he teaches courses in American literature, film noir, and southern literature, and he frequently offers courses on British Literature at Samford's Daniel House in London, where he was professor-in-residence in the Fall of 1997.
