Just in time for the holiday season, we are very pleased to host professional ecologist and active member of Huntsville's Operation Green Team, Soos Weber, as she presents “The Greening of Christmas: How to reduce your carbon footprint and enjoy the holidays even more.”

At this informative and engaging event you will learn about:

· The pros and cons of an artificial vs. a live Christmas tree.

· Recycling memorable tree decorations

· Eco-friendly holiday greeting cards and wrapping paper

· Giving gifts which are made sustainably

· What to do with all the waste after holiday parties

· How you and your family can place greater value on quality time, than on material "stuff"

· Throwing re-gifting parties Plus even more eco-friendly, (and budget friendly) fun ideas!

This event will take place on Tuesday, November 16 at 7 pm in the second floor events room in the Main branch.

What is happiness? Is it possible to truly attain? And if so, how?

These are questions we will be examining from two unique perspectives, in a special two-part lecture series just in time for the holidays.

In the first installment on Sunday, November 21, Dr. Gitendra Uswatte from the University of Alabama, Birmingham will present fascinating insights from the field of psychology, about how we perceive and experience happiness.

On Thursday, December 16, Dr. Erik Angner from the University of Alabama, Birmingham will speak about what great philosophical thinkers can teach us about the nature of happiness, and people's constant struggle to attain it.

Both events will take place in the second floor events room of the Main branch.

These events are free, and open to the public. Please contact Luisa at lmorenilla@hmcpl.org with any questions about these events. Read more about The Philosophy of Happiness

Diabetes affects millions of Americans, young and old, rich and poor, of all different races.

In observation of National Diabetes Month in November, the Help Yourself to Health Initiative is sponsoring a diabetes forum with a health professional from Huntsville Hospital who address topics including:  What is Diabetes? How is it diagnosed?  How can you prevent it? And what can be done to treat it?

We will also have an interactive session with exercise and nutrition tips, including healthy ideas for holiday meals.  We will review diabetes-related resources available online and in the Huntsville-Madison County Public Library.

This event will take place in the second floor events room of the Main branch.

Please contact Luisa for more information at lmorenilla@hmcpl.org.
