Special departments at HMCPL

Need specialized help? The HMCPL has several sections of staff containing librarians with especially deep knowledge in a particular area.

Calhoun Learning Lab

The Adult Education Program (AE) of Calhoun Community College has partnered with the Huntsville/Madison County Library and the Church of Nativity, Episcopal opening a center in downtown Huntsville to help adults improve literacy skills. The Adult Learning Center of Huntsville (ALC) provides a safe environment where volunteers coach adults in basic reading and math skills. Located on the 2nd floor of the downtown library, the center is currently opened three days per week and provides individualized instruction for over 30 adults in our community.

Computer Training Center

The Regional Computer Training Center offers free classes in computer basics to our staff and to the public. When classes are not meeting, our computers are open for the public to use for word processing, Internet surfing, etc. (See our computer FAQ page for more information.)

Heritage Room

Welcome to the Huntsville Heritage Room! We are a multi-media resource center for research in genealogy and regional history.

We have one of the finest genealogy collections in the region. We focus on states east of the Mississippi River and include computer-based resources, as well as print and microform collections. However, we also have materials on other regions of the U.S. and helpful resources for locating relatives from overseas.

Interlibrary Loan

Every library has to make decisions regarding what books to carry in their collection. If we don't have the materials you need, or if the item you're looking for in our collection is marked 'missing,' 'lost,' 'claims returned,' or 'long overdue,' we will be happy to set up an interlibrary loan for you.

Outreach Services

Our Outreach department coordinates the majority of the Library's activities that occur outside the Main Library's physical locale, including the Bookmobile, the Subregional Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, the Ready Reader Van, and services to senior citizens in Huntsville-area nursing homes.

Reference, Adult Services, and Computer Training Center

Welcome to the Reference and Adult Services Department at the Main Library! We offer a diverse set of resources and services to the members of the Huntsville community. The Reference department answers questions and provides research assistance in person, by telephone and by email. We also keep current and back issues of magazines and newspapers. Our Interlibrary Loan service provides nationwide access to magazines and books not held in our collection. We also offer free meeting rooms for individuals and groups.

Youth Services

Join the fun in Youth Services!  We house an extensive collection of print and audio-visual material for children and teens.  We have books, magazines, movies, audio-books, and music to enjoy for fun or to help with your next research project!
