Celebration of Writing with Murphy Writers Group
The Murphy Writers Group will be hosting a celebration of writing on Sat, Dec 8th at 2pm in the 2nd Floor Meeting Room at the Main Library, 915 Monroe Street, Huntsville, AL 35801. The event will include guest speakers, readings by members of the writing group, and a progressive story.
Light refreshments will be served. Admission is free.
Guest speakers are Dr. Monita Soni and "Steve" Gierhart.
Speaker Biographies:
- Dr. Monita Soni is a pathologist and diagnoses cancer in her day job. Reading and writing poetry is a passion that splashes her literally with a sparkling abundance. She is inspired by great twentieth century poets (Robert Frost, Keats, Browning and Tagore) and ancient Sufi poet like Hafiz, Rumi and Faiz. Her writing style weaves eastern and western cultures and creates organic rhythms. You can hear her commentaries on WLRH Sundial Writer's corner.
Her first book of poems " My Light Reflections" is well received in the literary community.
- “Steve” Gierhart is a retired business manager for the United States Army. Based in Huntsville, Alabama on Redstone Arsenal, his career lasted from 1975 to 2010 in which he managed contracts, finances/accounting, and cost estimating for several missile defense systems, among which were Stinger, Avenger, Chaparral, Sentinel, JLENS, SLAMRAAM, and Non-Line of Sight.
He hails from Shawnee, Oklahoma; but most of his adult life has been spent in the beautiful hills of North Alabama where he lives with his wife, Bonny, who raises Tennessee Walking Horses.
Between them, Steve and Bonny have 5 children and 7 grandchildren and another on the way.
Steve, the author of Shadow of The Conjurer and editor/publisher for The Ardent Writer Press, enjoys writing now that he is retired and plans more excursions of the imagination as well as supporting charitable organizations promoting reading and writing, such as The Huntsville Literary Association and The Alabama Writers' Forum .
He and Bonny, a retired engineer who worked as a contractor on several NASA and Army programs, will travel in their retirement though 15 horses, 4 dogs and 3 cats can crimp the best of plans.
The Murphy Writers Group, representing many different stages and genres of writing, meets on the second and fourth Saturday of each month at 3 p.m. at the Eleanor E. Murphy Library, 7910 Charlotte Drive SW, Huntsville, AL 35802. Members of the group are given the opportunity to read to their peers and receive positive and helpful feedback. The group is recommended for ages 14 and older. The group is led by Kemi Elufiede a PhD student, who has extensive experience working with adult writers.
