lqspring2017. 1:30-3. The destruction of the German pocket battleship Graf Spee off the coast of Montevideo, Uruguay, in December 1939, was Britain’s first naval victory of the Second World War. This is a story of naval operations, military intelligence, deception and all-to-human weakness. We will look at the Graf Spee’s military career as a raider and the fascinating story of its eventual scuttling as it sailed out of Montevideo harbor.
