Geocaching 101 for Families

An hour-long class in the Meeting Room at the Eleanor Murphy Library, followed by an optional cache run to practice new skills! Class will be taught by Bobby Hall from North AL Geocachers Association.

FAMILY FRIENDLY CLASS – Recommended for ages 8 yrs and up.

Have you heard the word but do not know what it means? Seen a newspaper article or scene in a TV show about it? Has a friend mentioned their favorite game/sport/ hobby and you want to learn more? Did you come across something hidden in the woods or under a park bench and want to find out what’s going on?

Come to a FREE presentation and learn the basics of GEOCACHING, which is a family-friendly, internet-based, outdoor adventure game that uses a GPS-enabled device to find containers hidden just around the corner and all over the world! Topics to be covered include:

  • Brief history of the Global Positioning System
  • Description of geocaching
  • Types of caches
  • How to hide and find a cache
  • Basics of geocaching.com
  • Supplies to take on a cache run
  • Swag and trackables
  • Basic usage of a GPSr
  • Logging your adventures

Come learn about a fairly inexpensive hobby that you can enjoy and experience on your own, with your entire family, or a few geocaching friends… and enjoy exploring places you didn’t know existed or were too busy to stop and visit.
