Author to discuss "What Stands in a Storm"

Kim Cross will discuss her acclaimed new book, What Stands in a Storm, a chronicle of the devastating April 2011 tornadoes, on Saturday, May 23, at 2 p.m. in the auditorium of the Downtown Huntsville Library. Admission is free, and books will be available for sale and signing.

Find book bargains at Bailey Cove used book sale

The Bailey Cove Friends of the Library will hold a Used Book Sale on Saturday, May 16, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, May 17, from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Bailey Cove Library.

Shop hardbacks, paperbacks, DVDs and VHS items. Most items are 25 cents with best-sellers priced at $1.

Gurley Library Challenge honors Sharon C. Cissell

The Friends of the Gurley Library will host the Gurley Library Challenge 5K Sharon C. Cissell Memorial Run on Saturday, May 9, starting at 8 a.m. at the rear of Madison County Elementary School. A one-mile fun run will begin at 9 a.m.

This annual fundraiser has been on hiatus for two years due to the illness and death of the race’s founder and director of 12 years, Sharon Cissell.

The Downtown Huntsville Library will present another Family Fun Night on Friday, May 1, from 5:30 to 9 p.m.

Tuesday Evening Concerts bring music to Downtown

Tuesday Evening Concerts @ The Library return to the Atrium of the Downtown Huntsville Library on April 21 at 6 p.m. Admission is free.

Buy a book, get a beer!

The Madison Public Library will host a book launch party for local author Michael Guillebeau and his new mystery novel, A Study in Detail. The event is set for Wednesday, April 15, from 3 to 10 p.m. at Blue Pants Brewery, 500 Lanier Road in Madison. Buy a book, get a beer!

A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Madison Library.

A Study in Detail involves a death that might be faked, an insurance investigator trying to prove fraud, and a husband seeking the truth about his wife’s disappearance.

Monrovia Read-A-Thon

The Monrovia Friends of the Library will hold a Read-A-Thon on Saturday, March 7, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Monrovia Public Library.

There will be special reading times and activities all day with snacks and drinks provided. Children are welcome to come in their pajamas and bring a favorite pillow or stuffed animal.

Madison County Reads: "Ready Player One"

The Huntsville-Madison County Public Library presents “Ready Player One” by Ernest Cline as the featured book for Madison County Reads 2015.

Thirty years in the future, the hero must solve a series of virtual riddles based on 1980s pop culture and gaming to save both his real and online worlds. Throughout March, the public is invited to join us for games, movies, lectures, and more celebrating the '80s.

Book sale at Bailey Cove

The Bailey Cove Friends of the Library will hold a book sale on Saturday, January 24, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday, January 25, from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Bailey Cove Library, 1409 Weatherly Plaza S.E.

Most items will cost just 25 cents with bestsellers going for only $1. Selection includes hardback and paperback fiction, non-fiction, books for children and teens, DVDs, CDs, and audiobooks.

Free flu shots at Downtown Library

The North Alabama Medical Reserve Corps Mobile Unit will provide free flu shots on Thursday, January 29, from 10 a.m. to noon in the front parking lot of the downtown Huntsville-Madison County Public Library, 915 Monroe St.
